Out alone in the Atplastic Ocean

It’s almost a month since I updated you on the progress of Isaac Giesen, a young New Zealander who is rowing across the Atlantic to raise funds for three charities in New Zealand and Australia dedicated to combating depression – a major contributor to the high suicide rates in both countries.

The Moodie Davitt Report is delighted to be his Gold Sponsor. Never, in fact, have I been prouder of a placement for our logo than when I saw it this week in prime position on Isaac’s boat, The Blue Rower, out in the middle (just about) of the vast Atlantic. The picture, taken from a support yacht that occasionally touches bases with the various entrants, shows Isaac in fine form and going strong.

Isaac called me again last week by satellite phone to update me on progress. He’d been frustrated by calm conditions for much of his time on the water but things were moving along nicely now he told me, with some strong winds and heavy swells aiding progress. Had he noticed any visible pollution of the waters, I asked? “Mate, it’s a garbage tip out here,” he said. “It’s really horrible.”

Plastic everywhere, according to Isaac. Shocking. If the anecdote told me anything it was that the travel retail industry should double our efforts to curb and ultimately eradicate the use of plastic. As a sector, travel retail is a serial offender. One that is contributing every day to the Atlantic turning into the Atplastic.

A message by satellite from Isaac. Under 1,000km to go and dreams of fried chicken are building.
