Feedback on last week’s Blog about ‘The Tommy Cooper Joke Book’ (kindly given to me by Aldeasa’s Martin Petchey) underlines the comic maestro’s enduring popularity (he died in 1984 during a live stage performance); especially it seems in the travel retail industry.
I have been inundated with examples of his wonderful dry wit, so just to get my own back, here’s a couple of personal favourites.
The first was inspired by my forthcoming visit to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup this Saturday at Ascot Racecourse in the UK, a sure-fire recipe to deplete The Moodie Report funds, based on recent experience.
Commenting on his own haplessness at backing racehorses, Tommy once cracked: “I backed a horse today at 20 to 1. He came in at 20 past 4.”
Later, drowning his sorrows, Tommy took a stiff drink. His companion said: “Do you always drink your gin neat?”
“No,” replied Tommy. “As a matter of fact, sometimes I don’t wear a tie and have my shirt hanging out.”
More please…
