There were cocktails on the roof terrace of the Standard. A private gig by Dev. An achingly trendy hotel in NYC’s Chelsea district. And male models in their underwear (I saved the best till last). The occasion? The official reveal of the hotly-anticipated ck one color collection, from Coty Prestige.
The make-up is being introduced in selected domestic markets this month, and will make its travel retail debut in September. It is a significant launch for the ck one brand, and for Coty too, as the latter continues to strengthen its presence within both the skincare and colour categories.
Strike a pose: Calvin Klein models strut their stuff at the launch of ck one color
The scale of the launch event reflects Coty’s aspirations for the new line, which is expected to generate retail sales of up to US$50 million in its first two years. To emphasise its cohesion with the wider Calvin Klein/ck one brand, the make-up was showcased during an exclusive preview of the house’s Fall apparel and accessories collection. In other words, last week I found myself in my favourite city on the planet, in a vast, warehouse-size space crammed with clothes and shoes to die for, gazing at unbelievably beautiful men (there may have been women too), wearing not very many clothes. Suffice to say they sent the right Mann for the job…
Three make-up artists were on hand to demonstrate the products. The comprehensive collection is said to offer a simplified approach to beauty, which embraces individualism and defies stereotypes. It is described as authentic, confident and cool – all core values of the wider ck one brand.
I’ve spent several days playing with the products – as has my elder daughter (aged 11 going on 21) – and we both agree they are pretty impressive. She loves the varied shade range and the minimalist, pill shaped packaging – especially the swivel-open mechanisms. I like the fact that so many of the products are multi-functional. It is smart stuff, on several levels.
I love make-up and wear a lot of it. My cosmetics case weighs almost as much as I do, but this is a bit of a drawback for a frequent flyer, so dual- or even triple-purpose products that save me time and excess baggage fees are an absolute boon. And I know I’m not alone. Therefore products such as ck one color’s 3-in-1 Face Makeup SPF 8, and the Brow Pencil & Gel Duo are sure to strike a chord with space-strapped and time-poor consumers everywhere.
Taking lip service to another level
My absolute favourite item, however, is the Color & Treat Lip Kit. This little beauty contains FIVE different products (an exfoliator, plumper, gloss, lipstick and balm), all presented in one slim, portable compact, complete with integral mirror. It is genius. I never want to be without it again.
This is not the first make-up range from the house of Klein; over the years there have been a couple of false starts, but this is the first collection in partnership with Coty Prestige, and the beauty behemoth has done its homework. ck one color looks great, performs well and offers a few innovative twists on the usual product repertoire. Look out for it at a counter near you very soon.
