Age ain’t nothing but a number

Last week, The Moodie Report was part of an exclusive group that was the first in the world to witness the unveiling of SK-II’s latest anti-ageing innovation – Stempower Essence – at Nuance-Watson (Singapore)’s stores in Changi Airport Terminal 1.

“Is age just a number or a destiny you can control?” That’s the million-dollar question that the leading prestige skincare brand wants to address with the launch of Stempower Essence.

According to SK-II, the new standard for youthful beauty is skin that is not only smooth, but also visibly “poreless-looking and bouncy”, i.e. skin with higher inner resilience and elasticity. As we age, however, the skin loses its inner resilience and as a result, our pores lose the power to close after sebum secretion. In contrast, the pores on young skin close naturally after sebum secretion.

Formulated with the new Stem-Acanax ES Complex featuring Stem-Acanax, Pitera, Artichoke Extract and Kinren Extract, Stempower Essence claims to boost skin’s inner resilience, resulting in immediate improvement in skin texture and immediate reduction of visible pores. In just two weeks, users will achieve that coveted poreless-looking, bouncy skin, says SK-II.

Poreless, bouncy faces were the order of the day at the beauty panel discussion, which followed a fashion show featuring supermodels and beauty icons Sheila Sim, Vivien Ong, Ivy Chng, Serena Adsit and Viola Tan. Ranging in ages from early 20s to late 40s, the five ladies shared their insights and views on why ‘Age Does Not Matter’ – the tagline of Stempower Essence.

For Sheila Sim, international runway model and Singapore’s first SK-II brand ambassador, age is nothing but a state of mind. The 29-year-old said: “Modelling is very different from other common jobs as the market is always looking for youthful looking girls. From my 12 years of experience in modelling, the tip to staying on top of the game is maintenance – skin, body, health.”

As I near the big 3-0 I am finding it harder to look human in the mornings and passably decent without makeup, much less maintain skin that is not only smooth, but also devoid of pores. But looking at Sheila Sim (who is my age!) I don’t know whether to believe in miracles and finally embark on a decent anti-ageing skincare routine, or just give up altogether because I can’t top that.

SK-II’s research has revealed that the key to our skin’s youthful beauty lies in activating its “Master Switch”. Scientifically known as Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR), the Master Switch lies within our epidermal root cells and is triggered by external or international factors act on our skin. When our Master Switch is triggered, antioxidants are generated and the longevity gene is activated, enhancing both protective and regenerative cell action. Switching on the Master Switch also regulates our cell environment resulting in protein production to increase our inner cell density, causing our cells to become plumper – an important factor in boosting our skin’s inner resilience.

With this Master Switch and SK-II Stempower Essence, it does seem that age – or the looks of it – is something we can control, with the right products, the right discipline and the right attitude. Thankfully, the travel retail industry is much more forgiving when it comes to age – but I probably shouldn’t take the risk.
