Is there a more picturesque setting for a duty free shop than this anywhere in the world?
I suspect not. The location is the exquisitely beautiful, blissfully tranquil island of Symi, a couple of hours by boat from Rhodes, Greece.
The retailer is Hellenic Duty Free Shops, which has a small, functional store here selling a standard range of duty paid and duty free goods.
But, as I discovered last week, there’s nothing standard about the setting, set adjacent to the crystal clear, azure waters of the Aegean sea and a pebble’s throw from a host of tavernas and souvenir shops that grace the waterside area.

Symi is a magical place. I went there to be free of duty. Unexpectedly, I discovered duty free.
