I’m at Hong Kong International Airport about to trial aviation newcomer Hong Kong Airlines back to London Gatwick.

It’s a 13 and a half hour flight but they told me at check-in that they have wi-fi onboard! Magnifique!! Or is it? I have to say I the only time I get decent sleep is on a long-haul flight but that possibility has just gone (figuratively) out the window.

I’m still sceptical. Will it work? Let’s see. If it does, expect my first Blog from 35,000 feet.

While all the attention is focused on Hong Kong International Airport’s retail offer, currently the subject of three much-anticipated tender results, tonight I focused on its food & beverage portfolio. I think it’s outstanding. What a great mix of east and west. Dining here offers real choice and a major incentive to get to the airport early. It’s brilliant.

I managed to get a bit of shopping in though. Well, make that a lot, as Hong Kong International boasts the most fabulous Shanghai Tang store (my favourite brand). And I also took a nostalgic walk inside Nuance-Watson HK’s general merchandise and perfumes & cosmetics stores, and Sky Connection’s main liquor & tobacco shop. Will they still hold those contracts by the time of my next visit? Who knows? Each has done a good job. But each is staring that most brutal of processes, the open tender, in the face.
