Kiwi takes flight as Foxes run wild

A flying Kiwi and eleven Foxes on the rampage.

That was the dramatic scenario at The Moodie Report’s officially adopted English football club, Leicester City, on Saturday as the promotion-chasing Championship team routed Huddersfield Town by 6 goals to 1.

As reported, Leicester City is owned by Asian Football Investments, a Thai consortium led by Vichai Raksriaksorn, Chairman of one of Asia’s leading travel retailers, King Power International Group (whose Senior Executive Vice President Susan Whelan, below, also doubles as Chief Executive of the football club).

In August we announced that The Moodie Report would donate US$50 to charity for each goal Leicester scores during its 46 Championship games this season. If the team wins promotion to the Premiership, we’ll add a bonus of US$5,000. As our cause, we’ve chosen The Moodie Report Foundation, dedicated to funding cancer research.

Six goals (for the second time in six weeks) means a further US$300 into the pot. That makes 44 goals for the season or a total of US$2,200, with plenty of games left in the season.

And the flying Kiwi? Well it’s not often this Blog talks about the exploits of New Zealand football players (the only unbeaten side in the last FIFA World Cup incidentally…) but given our recent rugby results (the All Blacks trashed by England) and woeful test cricket performance (all out for 45, yes I said 45, and no it wasn’t a 20 overs game, though it may as well have been) against the South Africans this week, you can’t blame me.

The said Kiwi was ‘All Whites’ striker Chris Wood (below), who having turned his back on lesser lights West Bromwich Albion and Millwall (clearly a Fox who didn’t like his Den), was signed by Leicester just before Saturday’s match.

And what a debut he had, scoring after just six minutes, nailing another soon after and narrowly missing his hat trick on several occasions.

Kiwis and Foxes, an unstoppable combination. Who would now bet against Leicester City winning promotion to the Premiership this year? You read it here first.

Footnote: I’m delighted and honoured to add that Leicester City Football Club Foundation has just announced that The Moodie Report Foundation, dedicated to aiding cancer research, is one of its officially supported charities for 2013.

  • OK, bait taken…. Name-calling is one thing, but lumping us in with Millwall is below the belt..

We at ‘lesser lights’ West Bromwich Albion wish Chris all the very best at his new club, and we hope we’ll be welcoming him back to The Hawthorns as an opposing player very soon (preferably in the Premier League). To show there’s no hard feelings, I hereby pledge to The Moodie Report Foundation 20 pounds per goal Chris scores for Leicester until the end of the season (so that’s 40 quid already). Goals in the play-offs count treble.

Good luck to the Foxes; here’s to a Leicester-Crystal Palace play-off final (at which point I will expect Martin to come clean on his loyalties).
