Run for Her, the 8th Annual Los Angeles 5K Run & Friendship Walk on 11 November, sponsored by DFS Group through its ‘Sleepwalkers around the World’ theme, has raised over US$900,000 and is set to break through the million Dollar barrier in coming days.

As reported, Run for Her is held each year to raise funds for the battle against ovarian cancer, a particularly tough variant of a disease that in all its forms will affect one in every three lives.

This’s year event was given a tremendous boost by the DFS sponsorship, which brought not only funding but also crucial worldwide exposure. The company’s support came about due to the struggle one of its own team was having with the disease – Lynn Arce (below), Vice President Global Creative and Consumer Marketing. Lynn has just successfully completed her treatment at the world-class Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles and is raring to get back to work full time.

By the looks of it, she already is. Through her courage in being willing to talk about her illness and front the great DFS campaign Lynn has helped funding for and awareness of ovarian cancer tremendously.

“We had a great event and close to 5,000 runners/walkers in LA and lots of money generated for cancer research,” Lynn told me yesterday.

That’s an understatement. As of this morning the event’s official website had raised US$853,179, a figure that will be topped by US$50,000 from The Moodie Report and from further efforts by the DFS team in coming days. The message on the runners’ blue shirts proclaiming ‘run for her – run for the women in your life’ sums up the importance of this initiative nicely.

In fact, fund-raising continues until 31 December. If you want to make a donation please visit http://runforher.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1019200
