Delhi is a big place. I mean really big. Conservative estimates put the population at well over 13 million, a figure that is soaring each year.

So the chances of a visitor to the city bumping into anyone they knew is distant – about one in, say, 13 million…

But that’s exactly what happened during The Moodie BLOG’s tour of some of the local shopping malls with Alpha Future’s Dimantha Kinigama and his wife Ruvi.

As we took our lives in our hands crossing a busy road between two of the leading Gurgaon area shopping malls a distinctly recognisable voice rang out: “Well, well, well, what are you doing here?”

It was Stewart Dryburgh (pictured second left), formerly General Manager of Nestle International Travel Retail and since January 2006 the company’s General Manager for Confectionery in India, out for a Sunday visit to the movies with his wife Caroline (next to Stewart).

The most unlikely – and pleasant – of catch-ups ensued. Anyone who knew Stewart’s passion for the business while in travel retail (he famously pledged to double the category’s size in five years) will not be surprised to learn that he is enjoying the challenge of Delhi and India – and making a difference.

He also keeps a close eye on travel retail developments and praises the efforts of Alpha in raising the retail bar at Delhi International Airport.

“How did you spot me in this crowd, especially under my hat?” I ask him.

He points to my black polo-shirt and the familiar Dubai Duty Free logo. “It was a dead giveaway,” he laughs.

  • what an impressive and interesting tour!!

I think this issue about india, China and etc will be fantastic!!
