I’m on the road again, this time bound for Manila to meet Duty Free Philippines. I flew with Qatar Airways via Doha and was impressed by the experience. Fantastically friendly service onboard, a great choice of inflight entertainment – and one of the best duty free shopping magazines I’ve seen in a long time.

Weary after the six-hour night flight from Heathrow, I stopped off briefly at the Premium Transfer Terminal at Doha International Airport, where I was due to meet an old friend or two.

I must have been more bleary eyed than usual for I could have sworn that was Qatar Duty Free Senior Vice President Keith Hunter in the light box advertisement for Tom Ford’s Grey Vetiver fragrance. Has Keith been moonlighting, I wondered?

There was no doubting though the familiar Welsh features of ARI Senior Consultant to Qatar Duty Free Alan Edwards (despite his deft impersonation of the Marlboro man, below).

Alan’s enjoying his time out here working with Keith and the Qatar Duty Free team in the lead-up to the opening of the New Doha International Airport in 2012.

That promises to be one of the world’s great airports, and you can bet your last Qatari Riyal that the duty free offer will be every bit as good. I’m no doubt going to be spending a lot of time here over the next year or two, but for now a whistle-stop visit will have to suffice. First it’s on to Manila…
