The land of the Arrivals duty free phenomenon

The following two tabs change content below.

I’ve arrived in Manila, home to the world’s most important duty free Arrivals shopping business. From the moment you enter Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the signage for Duty Free Philippines’s (DFP) Fiesta Shopping Mall is everywhere.

The legions of Balikbayans (overseas-based Filipinos) and OFWs (overseas foreign workers) who pour through this airport every year represent huge business for DFP, especially as they have 15 days in which to spend their generous US$1,000 allowance.

I’m here to see DFP Chief Operating Officer Lorenzo ‘Enchong’ Formoso, who is leading an ambitious upgrading programme of the retailer’s airport and downtown shops, as well as one of the best consumer communications campaigns I have ever seen from a travel retailer (click here to see the fantastic DFP YouTube viral ad).

All this activity creates the perfect platform for DFP’s 25th anniversary celebrations, which kick off next May. We’ll bring you more exciting news on that landmark soon. But first, I’m planning to visit Fiesta Mall. I’ve heard it is an extraordinary place.
