Memories of Danny

May 25 was the first anniversary of the tragic death of CTC-ARI Airports General Manager Danny Galvin in a road accident in Cyprus – and a year on family and friends gathered in Cork to mark the occasion.

The event included a church service, a golf outing (where the top prize was the inaugural award of the Danny Galvin Memorial Trophy, presented above by Danny’s wife Diane to winner Keith Buckley of ARI) and an enjoyable evening of refreshments and recollection.

The day began with Mass at St Columba’s Church in Danny’s home parish of Douglas, County Cork. Family and friends then moved on to the beautiful surroundings of Fota Island Golf Resort, where 36 golfers teed off to play for the memorial trophy. They, along with non-golfers who attended, also helped raise funds to purchase sports kit for Danny’s former school Bun Scoil Chriost Ri – which Danny represented with distinction in his youth.

After the tournament, guests assembled for the prize giving ceremony and the presentation of sports kit to Principal Dave O’Kelly of Danny’s former school (a presentation made by Danny’s father Dan Galvin, below).

Closing the day, and speaking on behalf of the Galvin family, Danny’s brother Richard thanked friends and family, the golfers, co-organisers John Kilmartin, Rachel Grogan and John Boland as well as prize sponsors ARI, Patrón Spirits, Pernod Ricard, Max Benjamin Candles, Scorpio and Premier Portfolio.

Richard said: “It is a testament to Danny’s popularity and tragic passing that so many friends and colleagues turned out in Danny’s memory for the first Danny Galvin Golf Memorial Event.”
