I’ve just finished my first training run for The Moodie Multi-National Marathon*, due to take place in early March.

The marathon will be run in travel retail industry teams of six. Each team member will run/walk one-sixth of a marathon (7.03km), anywhere in the world.

As training sessions go, mine wasn’t very impressive. But it was a start. It’s going to take me a while after my recent illness to get back to full strength and consequently it took me 12 minutes to complete 1.1 kilometres (at the Miles for Smiles run in Dubai in late 2009 I did 10km in under 46 minutes so you get some idea of how far I have slipped back). Even then my legs are not just like jelly but also have some blancmange and ice cream thrown in for good measure.

Previously, I always associated stepping back onto the ‘dreadmill’ after a period’s inactivity with sore legs and a feeling of ‘what have I let myself in for?’. This time round I had an exhilarating sense of liberation. Springsteen blaring at full force, the dreadmill whirring, and me running at the speed of… a not very well great-grandmother. Maybe I need to change my music to a foxtrot.

Now I need your help to put a bit more spring in my step. I’d welcome any donations, big or small, via my fund-raising link http://moodiemarathon.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=461550&lis=1&kntae461550=6650FDA6C0A64963B7795E235EC203A5&supId=319906365

This run represents a literal stride (or two…) back towards full health for me. I may not be able to run fast but run I will, all the way to the end. I have made it across tougher finishing lines than this in recent weeks and so nothing will stop me this time around. *The Moodie Multi-National Marathon, sponsored by M&Ms, is a unique initiative designed to raise money and awareness for the travel retail charity Hand in Hand for Haiti, which is set to open a world-class school in Saint Marc, Haiti, in coming months – a response to the tragic January 2010 earthquake. Fifteen teams have already signed up with at least another 20 expected. Over US$11,000 has already been donated.

Participants can run on treadmills, track or any terrain of their choice – the more exotic the better.
The teams signed up to date are:
– The ARI World Rovers
– [Ed] Brennan’s Cruisers
– The Beauty Globetrotters (the Lauder group)
– DFS United
– Moodie in Motion
– a stunning six-team entry from Patron (variously titled Gran Patron, Patron Anejo, Patron Citronge, Patron Reposado, Patron Silver and Patron XO Cafe)
– JHA’s (Jonathan Holland & Associates) Asian Tigers
– AMP Trading Middle East
– The TFWA Flying Team
– Essence Corp.
